The Church Street area

Church Street (originally called Kirkgate) is one of the oldest streets in Addingham and No.15, known as Fir Cottage was built in 1677 on the site of a medieval house (the hearth has been found beneath the present floor). This area was one of the original three 'centres' (along with the Old School area on Main Street and the Green area at the top) of what was known as Long Addingham.
This used to be the road into the village from Ilkley before the present (turnpike) road alongside the Cricket Field, was built in the 1830s.
There were two pubs in Church Street; The Junction Inn at the Ilkley Road end, which later became the Cornerstone House Tea Rooms, and the King's Arms (or King's Head) on the corner of North Street.

Church Street leaves Main Street near the Cricket Ground with Orchard Avenue Estate (built in the 1990s) on the left and Croft House Fold (on the site of a former plant nursery) on the right. Further down little Parkinson Fold is on the left and then Sawyers Garth before the junction with North Street. Past this junction Sycamore Drive (named after the large tree near the corner) is on the right and the Parish Church drive on the left, through the Church Orchard. The sports field on the right was left to the village by a Mr Hoffman Wood. Low Mill Lane on the bend was the continuation of the earliest road to Ilkley (along the river) but Church Street now goes round to the junction with Old Ilkley Road and then the current Ilkley Road.

Pubs Re-opened

It was a sad day when two of our
village pubs closed almost at the
same time - The Fleece and
The Craven Heifer.
Now, The Craven Heifer has
re-opened under new management,
offering delicious Chinese cuisine,
and The Fleece has also re-opened.
Great news!
And what is more - the former
Good Food Shop, which has been
closed since the building collapsed,
is also re-opening soon as Frewin's Cafe
(during the day) and Bistro (evening.

Details will be added to our Pubs page
http://www.addingham.info/eatinganddrinking.html when available.
