Main Street

Main Street is the old A65 Ilkley to Skipton road (before the village by-pass was opened in 1990) and runs east from the junction with Silsden Road and Skipton Road near the Craven Hiefer down to opposite the Cricket Ground where it becomes Ilkley Road.

The route of the road through Addingham from Ilkley to Skipton has been changed several times over the years. The earliest route was alongside the river from Ilkley (more or less the present Dalesway footpath) to Low Mill Lane, then along Church Street, Main Street, Moor Lane and along this high level route to Skipton.

From the top of Main Street, notable features are:-

The Craven Heifer public house

Over 200 years old, The Craven Heifer is named after the champion heifer, reputed to be the largest ever bred, by the Reverend William Carr, Rector of the parish of Bolton Abbey, a neighbouring district of Craven, in 1807.

The Townhead Industrial Estate (on the site of Townhead textile Mill)

Townhead Mill was built by Ambrose Dean about 1797 powered by water from Town Beck although he later bought a Boulton & Watt steam engine to supplement the water wheel. Initially a cotton spinning mill Dean was described as a calico manufacturer in 1811 and the mill as a sawmill in 1850. The mill was destroyed by fire in the 1960s and the site is now light industrial units.
